These are the key documents you'll need to work in Portugal
If you're an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen dreaming of living and working in the sunny and vibrant country of Portugal, you'll need to ensure you have the right documents to get started.
Not only are these documents important for you to work legally in the country, but they will also make other general administrative processes much easier.
And if you're living in a country with beautiful beaches and pleasant weather, you don't want to be worrying about sorting out legal papers when you could be enjoying the ocean.
What documents will you need?
Tax Identification Number (NIF)
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a tax identification number required for practically all administrative processes in Portugal, such as receiving a salary or opening a bank account.
With this unique number, you can live and work in the country, and your NIF will appear on all your documents.
How to get your NIF?
You can apply for the NIF at a local tax office (Serviço de Finanças). If you're not yet in Portugal, you can apply through a fiscal representative.
You'll need to present the following documents:
- Your passport or ID card (plus a copy).
- Proof of address (can be in your home country).
- Application form provided at the office.

Social Security Number
Everyone working in Portugal must have a social security number (Número de Identificação da Segurança Social). This gives you access to healthcare and allows you to work legally.
Once you have a number, it will remain the same forever.
How to get your social security number?
Typically, your employer will apply for your social security number on your behalf. However, if you need to do it yourself, you can go to a local social security office (Segurança Social).
You'll need:
- Your NIF.
- Your passport or ID card (plus a copy).
- Employment contract or a promise of contract.

If you plan to reside in Portugal for more than three months, you must apply for a Registration Certificate (Certificado de Registo) at the City Hall (Câmara Municipal) of your area of residence.
This certificate is mandatory and confirms your right to reside in Portugal.
How to get the Registration Certificate?
You should go to the relevant City Hall and present:
- Valid passport or ID card.
- Employment declaration (work contract) or proof of sufficient financial means.
- Application form provided at the City Hall.

How to get the Atestado de Residência?
Visit your local Junta de Freguesia with:
- Your passport or ID card.
- Proof of residence (rental contract or utility bill).
- You may need two witnesses to confirm your residence.
