🌍 Thinking of working in Latvia?
If you're an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen, good news: you don’t need a visa to work in Latvia. But you do need a few legal documents to get started and make your move as smooth as possible.
Whether you're going to work in customer support, hospitality, or a remote tech job in beautiful Riga, sorting your paperwork early is the best way to avoid headaches and enjoy your new Baltic adventure from day one. 🧳
✅ What documents do you need to work legally in Latvia?
1. Personal Code (Personas kods)
This is your Latvian ID number—and you’ll need it for everything: paying taxes, getting a salary, visiting a doctor, even opening a bank account.
How to get it:
You'll receive your personal code automatically when you register your residence in Latvia.
📍 Apply at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA).
📎 Bring with you:
-
Your passport or national ID.
-
Proof of address (like a rental agreement).
-
Employment contract or proof of sufficient funds.

2. Registration Certificate for EU Citizens
If you're staying in Latvia for more than 90 days, you must apply for this certificate. It confirms your right to live and work in the country.
How to apply:
🗂 Go to your local OCMA office (or apply online).
📝 You’ll need:
-
A valid ID or passport.
-
Proof of employment OR enough resources to support yourself.

Proof of address in Latvia.
💡 This certificate doesn’t expire, but make sure to update your info if you change jobs or move!

All foreigners staying in Latvia more than 90 days must officially register their address.

4. Social Security Registration
Once you start working, your employer must register you with the State Social Insurance Agency (VSAA). This gives you access to healthcare, pension, sick leave and more.
💡 Ask your employer to confirm that you're registered!

💡 Pro Tips
