Relocating to another country for work isn’t just a job change — it’s a life change. At City Job Offers, we talk every day with candidates who are thinking about starting over somewhere new: better weather, better lifestyle, better opportunities.
Today, we’re sharing a real anonymized interview with a German-speaking candidate who wanted to relocate from Romania to Portugal. Why? He wanted a fresh start. And he wasn’t alone — many candidates feel exactly the same.
🧠 Spoiler: You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need the right attitude — and someone to guide you.
Let’s start with the most important part: motivation.
In the conversation, the candidate said:
“I want to make some changes in my life. I like the climate in Portugal, and I understand it’s more affordable. I’m not looking just for customer support — I have experience in different areas like procurement and finance.”
This is what recruiters love to hear:
You're open to a new environment
You want to grow personally and professionally
You’re not afraid of new beginnings
Some candidates relocate to save money, some to learn a new language, others to enjoy the sun or live closer to the sea. All reasons are valid — you just need to know yours.
This first call is not an exam. It’s a conversation to get to know you and understand:
Your language skills (usually German + English)
Your work experience
Your relocation timeline
Your personal motivation and flexibility
There’s also a short language test later (just grammar and comprehension), and then interviews with company recruiters.
💬 Tip: Don’t overthink it. Be honest and talk about your real goals. The recruiter is on your side.
This is often the part candidates worry about most. But here’s the good news: you won’t be alone.
Here’s what you can typically expect:
✅ Shared housing with a private room
✅ Bills included (electricity, water, Wi-Fi, etc.)
✅ Support with your tax number and local documents
✅ Airport pick-up in many cases
✅ Flight reimbursement or free return ticket after 6–12 months
✅ Social activities and local onboarding
✅ Affordable cost (e.g. around €200/month all included)
You’ll share common areas (kitchen, laundry, etc.) with other international colleagues. Later on, you’re free to move to your own flat once you feel settled.
Yes, it’s possible — even if you apply separately. In the interview, the candidate asked:
“Can I bring my girlfriend? She doesn’t have the same qualifications, but she speaks English and Romanian.”
The recruiter explained:
You can both apply, and if both are hired, the housing team can assign rooms in the same flat
Each person needs to go through the process individually
If only one of you is hired, the other can look for a job locally later
Every situation is different, and recruiters will always try to support you.
Why do so many people take the leap? Because relocation offers more than just a job.
You get:
✈️ A full support system for moving
🤝 Community: you’ll meet people from across Europe
☀️ Lifestyle: live near the beach or in vibrant cities
